Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18th 2000) is an American performer and actress who worked for more than 40 years. London, a torch singer loved for her smooth, mellow singing voice and her smooth, languid contralto was a recording artist on more than thirty albums of pop and jazz classics between 1955 and 1969. Inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 was her performance of "Cry me a river" which she had included on her debut album. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award as a actress for her portrayal in Emergency! of Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her career began as an actress while she was employed as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year acting career began with film in 1944 which included roles for female leads in numerous westerns, co-starring with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) as well as Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) and together with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and alongside Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-50s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional music career. In 1969 she released her final studio album. But she was an actor on the Emergency series in the role of Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979), she was with her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband who produced the show.
